New York Jets: To Vet or not to Vet At Cornerback

Robert Saleh’s appointment as the New York Jets head coach was a surprise for many and everyday since has been one revelation after another.

He seems to draw people to him, making everyone comfortable while being his unapologetically himself.

Saleh reeks of authenticity and I like it.

Turning this team around will be no small fit but for Saleh his approach to one of the gripes Jets fans has had about this team (the Cornerback position) has been unique like the man himself. Most are of the notion that a Veteran is needed but true to form Saleh is not like most and his views on how to build a team are shining through here.

Saleh has chosen to let the young guys get all the reps because he believes the difference in the best players are minute and is made up of opportunity and reps and a coaching staff’s willingness to let them grow.

These beliefs can in my opinion bring about the birth of household names built right at one Jets drive, who can carry the position for many years or can devolve into a scramble at the late stages of the offseason to get more veteran presence which never bodes well for teams.

Of the young corners twenty three year old Bryce Hall, born in Harrisburg, PA not to far away from The Jets facilities seemed to have separated himself or maybe he has been the most consistently available.

Hall flashed in his rookie year, showing a smooth and alert style backed by preparedness mostly seen in more seasoned players.

Bless Austin though athletic seem to struggle with the technical side of the position and is often caught off guard because his eyes are almost always in the wrong place.

Lamar Jackson and Javelin Guidry flashed but on a smaller level and there’s the rookies.

Talented on many levels with energy and skills just waiting to be carefully polished into sharp corners awful weapons, these young men have an opportunity different from most teams who give the young guys a few reps here and there but lean on the vets in the room.

If this works like Robert Saleh envisions, it will most likely be one of many jewels placed in a crown that he will be wearing sooner rather than later as the king of New York.
