Joe Douglas works his magic when the sun goes down! Tonight, the Jets GM agreed to terms with former Raiders and Rams defensive back Lamarcus Joyner. It’s a one year deal for Joyner valued at approximately $4.5M, according to Ian Rapoport.
Joyner is coming off a 2 year stint with the Raiders, which saw him play primarily in the slot, a position he’d limited exposure in. Early indications are that he will revert back to his favored Safety role in New York, an excellent decision by the Jets brass. During his final reason with the Rams (playing safety), Joyner had a PFF grade of 74.9.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the Jets deploy their safety group in 2021. Team MVP Marcus Maye, Ashtyn Davis and the newly acquired Joyner, all project best to a FS role in a single-high defense. One thing is clear: Saleh and the Jets are valuing speed and theability to play coverage on the back end. Expect a lot of “Big Nickel” packages and interchangeable pieces on the back end.
