It was a welcome to the NFL moment for most of the New York Jets squad carrying the youngest squad in the NFL at 25 year plus and it showed. Those young men kept clawing to the end even when they made mistakes or the situation seemed out if hand. That’s a salute to the coaching staff and the players who seem to believe in themselves highly.
Mistakes were made, players out of position, missed assignments and a young QB learning that the answers he grew up learning in college won’t save him in the NFL, he needs a new set of answers. His two Touchdowns both born out of improvisation did show his natural instincts can take him places but his one interception and few protection issues indicate growth is needed and there’s nothing wrong with that, if those persist then it would be a major issue.
The offensive line was bad this week giving up 6 sacks. They faced more than a four man rush 17 times out of 43 drop backs and when facing four man rushes Carolina made sure they took advantage of a line that had very little time together by twisting and stunting heavily. I remember pointing out that John Benton’s system is known to take time to set in but when it does it’s pretty potent.
As I’ve written before an abundance of patience will be needed to see us through this season but the young Jets showed that they’re made of the right stuff, let’s see how this all come continues next week.
