Could The Jaguars Stun Everbody and Select Zach Wilson At #1 Overall?

While the consensus for months has been that Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence will be the top pick in the 2021 NFL draft, there has been a surge of momentum behind BYU’s Zach Wilson in recent weeks, with high profile pundits such as NBC Sports’ Chris Simms and retired Superbowl winning Washington QB Joe Theismann among those who say they believe Wilson is the draft’s best signal-caller.

But that sentiment doesn’t extend to the Jacksonville Jaguars who own the #1 selection and have been said to be infatuated with Lawrence since last offseason.

Or does it?

Per Mike Florio of PFT, Jacksonville has already held two Zoom meetings with Wilson and the team’s QB coach – former Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer – has spent time discussing the BYU QB with John Beck, a former QB himself who has been working privately with Wilson.

So does this mean Jacksonville is seriously considering drafting Wilson? Possibly, though it could just be that the team is doing its due diligence.

However, if the Jaguars did go with Wilson over Lawrence, it wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened.

In the lead up to the 2018 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns were considered a lock to select USC quarterback Sam Darnold at #1 overall for months.

It wasn’t until a few days before the draft that word began to leak that Cleveland may actually prefer Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, who ultimately ended up being the pick at #1 with Darnold falling to the Jets at #3.
